Museums & Race works to challenge and address institutional policies and systems that perpetuate oppressions in museums. We implement institutional change towards anti-racism by developing resources and content for in-person and remote workshops, trainings, conferences, and events.

As a collective, Museums & Race is a volunteer-led organization of museum professionals, museum lovers, and change-makers working towards institutional anti-racism. Founded in 2015, this non-hierarchical organization is led by Steering Committee Members from across the U.S. in multiple museum sectors. Steering Committee Members serve a minimum of a two-year term and then cycle off to make space for fresh perspectives on the Committee. Although not a membership organization, we invite volunteers to help us with in-person conferences, workshops and events. The practice of Museums & Race is rooted in seeking a balance between diverse identities in all of its work and communications. No single person speaks on behalf of Museums & Race. All training, consultations and engagements require participation from a minimum of two people, ensuring at least one BIPOC and one non-BIPOC is always present.
